HOW OFTEN TO HAVE YOUR CHIMNEY SWEPT - YEARLY

The National Fire Protection Association Standard states the fireplace and chimney should be inspected yearly for any structural faults.

We recommend getting your chimney swept at the same time.

When Duke's Masonry cleans your chimney, they will do a visual inspection of the items listed on the diagram to the left.

It is intended as a convenience to our customer, not as certification of fire worthiness or safety.

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING A SAFE MASONRY CHIMNEY

Waterproof brick, block, stone with two coats of Prime-A-Pell waterproofer (Willamette Graystone in Roseburg carries this product)

NOTE: Allow no overspray to come in contact with roof

  Install stainless steel rain cap.

NOTE: Make sure you have the proper size and do not overtighten bolts to avoid cracking the flu liner.

Flashing- caulk any cracks. Prohibit flashing from rusting by painting or in worst cases roof tar. When flashing a masonry chimney there are two types of flashing: roofers flashing and mason's flashing (counter flashing).

NOTE: When having your home re-roofed, require the roofer to replace both. Too often we see new roofing, where the chimney flashing has not been replaced.

Chimney Crown-the very top of the chimney that sheds the water off the top of the chimney. If crown is weathered and cracked: repair, replace waterproof.

We use a product with a 15 year warranty.

Apply two coats of crown sealer-elastic it won't shrink or crack.

Flu Liners-There are different types of flu liners. Masonry fireplaces have clay flu liners. There are two types: a light weight flu liner and a heavy weight terra cotta flu liner.

NOTE: The lightweight liners are notorious for cracking and needing to be replaced. We recommend only using the terra cotta liner.

Yearly Sweep and Inspection- It is important to have your chimney swept and inspected once a year. The diagram above lists the items that need to be inspected.
